8th SBTA Board Meeting Update

The 8th Board Meeting of the Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA) was held today, 31st December 2025, under the chairmanship of Health Minister, Dr. Azra Pechuho, at her office, where the yearly progress of SBTA’s initiatives was thoroughly reviewed. The meeting provided a platform to evaluate achievements, challenges, and strategies for the year ahead.
During the discussion, the board focused on advancing efforts for the prevention of Thalassemia and Hemophilia, ensuring the safe and timely provision of blood, and strengthening the implementation of NAT (Nucleic Acid Testing) to improve blood screening. Additionally, the development of plasma fractionation programs was highlighted as a key step toward enhancing patient care and treatment outcomes.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to enhancing blood safety, preventive healthcare, and public health initiatives across Sindh, reflecting SBTA’s continued dedication to the well-being of the community.

Day 2 of National Workshop Highlights Progress in Blood Safety, Thalassaemia Care, and Regulatory Strengthening

Day 2 of the workshop continued with highly productive and impactful sessions focused on improving blood safety, strengthening thalassaemia services, and enhancing regulatory frameworks across Pakistan. The morning began with Technical Session III, featuring insightful presentations on Thalassaemia Regulation & Prevention in Punjab by Prof. Shabnum Bashir, Quality Control in Blood Banking by Dr. Munira Burhani, and Challenges in Voluntary Blood Transfusion by AVM Aftab, followed by an interactive Q&A session.
A comprehensive panel discussion moderated by Dr. S.K. Pasha brought together leading experts—Prof. Saqib Ansari, Prof. Nazish Saqlain, Dr. Abdul Qayum, Col. Nadeem, and Dr. Arsalan Haider—who explored crucial themes including TTI screening, national data management, thalassaemia center performance, TDT drug repositioning, and rising HIV outbreaks. Later presentations included updates from across the country and the SBTA sector, with Dr. Durenaz Jamal, Secretary SBTA, delivering an important session on Sindh RBCs: Challenges, Stats & Expansion Plans, highlighting SBTA’s ongoing commitment to safer and more efficient transfusion systems.
We extend heartfelt thanks to all speakers, facilitators, and partnering institutions for contributing to this meaningful initiative. A special note of gratitude to Dr. Lou Depang, WHO Pakistan Representative, for his invaluable support, guidance, and continuous collaboration in strengthening national blood regulatory systems. SBTA Welcomes Brig (R) Syed Muhammad Waseem Wasti as COO of Fatimid Foundation

The Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA) hosted a productive meeting to welcome Brig (R) Syed Muhammad Waseem Wasti, the newly appointed COO of Fatimid Foundation.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Dur-e-Naz Jamal (Secretary, SBTA), Brig. (R) Dr. Hamid Jamal Siddiqui (CEO, Regional Blood Centre Karachi), and Dr. Saqib Ali Shaikh (Director Health Services, Karachi Division) and Dr. Aftab Ahmed Mallah (Director, SBTA).
The discussion focused on ongoing Fatimid Foundation projects and explored opportunities for strengthened collaboration to enhance safe and sustainable blood transfusion services across Sindh.
Projects of Children’s Sindh Government Hospital, Karachi, including plans for their new building, were also discussed.
Dr. Dur-e-Naz Jamal extended SBTA’s full support to Fatimid Foundation’s initiatives and reiterated the Authority’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and patient care.
Together, we continue to work towards a safer and stronger blood transfusion network across the province.

Breast Cancer Awareness Session at Muhammadi Welfare Foundation
A special awareness session was held at Muhammadi Welfare Foundation, Numaish, highlighting the importance of early detection and awareness about breast cancer.
Dr. Hina Jamil, Senior Medical Officer, Bait-ul-Sukoon Cancer Hospital, spoke on “Emotional Strength and Nutrition – Protecting Ourselves from Breast Cancer.”
Dr. Batool Memon, Consultant Medical Oncologist, Dow University Hospital (Ojha Campus), shared valuable insights on “Myths About Breast Cancer.”
Our Chief Guest, Dr. Dur-e-Naz Jamal, Secretary, Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority, was honored with the Outstanding Contribution to Thalassemia Prevention Award for her remarkable efforts in establishing thalassemia prevention testing facilities across Sindh.

RBC Shaheed Benazirabad Hosts Blood Donation Camp with Fatimid Foundation

A Blood Donation Camp was successfully held on Thursday, 17 July 2025, at Civil Hospital Nawabshah from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The activity was organized by the Regional Blood Centre Shaheed Benazirabad in collaboration with the Fatimid Foundation, and was strongly supported by Dr. Yar Ali Jamali Sb, Medical Superintendent, Civil Hospital Nawabshah.

Emergency Meeting of Larkana Blood Banks Focuses on Safe Practices and Preparedness

On 9th May 2025, an emergency meeting of all district Larkana blood banks was held at the DHO Office, chaired by Dr. Muhammad Ali Bhutto and co-chaired by Dr. Farhan Ali Jokhio and Dr. Aneel Kumar. Dr. HansRaj (DBTO, SBTA Karachi) briefed participants on safe blood banking practices, while the chair directed all facilities to ensure blood availability in emergency situations and submit daily inventory updates both online and in writing.

Historic Step for Hemophilia Care: Low-Dose Prophylaxis Launched in Sanghar

HWSK celebrated its first World Hemophilia Day at the newly established Hemophilia Ward in Civil Hospital Sanghar, organized with Dr. Aftab Alam and supported by the Sindh Government, WFH, and Hemophilia Foundation Pakistan. Chief Guest Ms. Sarah Javeed (Deputy Commissioner Sanghar) honored the event, which included an awareness session by Dr. Shan-e-Zehra and the launch of low-dose prophylaxis treatment for 10 patients — a historic step for hemophilia care in interior Sindh.
